What’s the Hoot November 12th-16th

Dear DCS Families,
As you read this week’s Hoot, we want to draw your attention to the weekly attendance rates listed for each campus. These rates are a reflection of the number of students absent during the week. The rates you see do not include tardies or early releases. As a reminder, students absent for 10% of the days they are enrolled are considered chronically absent. Not only does this affect Discovery’s NSPF star rating, it also limits the student’s ability to take full advantage of Discovery’s educational program.
Additionally, we have noticed an increase in the use of cellular phones by students during the instructional day. Please remind your child that cellular phones must be turned off and remain off between 8:00 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Use of cellular phones that violate state or federal law, any DCS policies or regulations, or Discovery Charter School’s Acceptable Use Policy, is prohibited.  Confiscated devices are available for pick up at the end of the day but phones that have been confiscated multiple times will only be returned to a parent/guardian. Many of our classrooms have telephones and students are able to use the telephone in the office.

Cellular phones must remain off during a school evacuation, lockdown, or drill.  During these situations, tell your child NOT to try to contact you by cell phone until permission is given by school staff, thus allowing emergency communication channels to remain open.  DCS has the capability of contacting parents/guardians in an emergency. Additionally, administrators and safety personnel are prepared with two-way radios and cell phones.

Lastly, families will receive communication from teachers for Parent-Teacher Conferences. We have reserved the afternoons of December 7th and December 14th for conferences in addition to morning or afternoon appointments scheduled with your child’s teacher(s). Conferences are a great time to discuss your child’s progress at Discovery and ask questions about data and curriculum. We encourage all families to schedule a conference time with their child’s teacher(s).
Enjoy your weekend,
DCS Team
